Now that the FSS studbook for the Berger Picard has been opened, the BPCA would like to strongly encourage Picard breeders to register their litters and individual puppies with the Foundation Stock Service. It is a fairly easy process but please note the FSS procedures.
1. Obtain DNA profile on imported dogs.
From the AKC website:
Effective for imported dogs registered on or after March 1, 2006, any imported dog registered with the AKC must have an AKC DNA profile prior to registering its first litter whelped in the United States. This requirement does not affect foreign dogs registered with the AKC before March 1, 2006. This requirement applies to both males and females and will be used to verify future generations produced by these dogs.
This means that all European imports need to have their DNA profiled with the AKC before submitting the litter registration paperwork.
AKC has two types of kits. The regular kit is available at no charge, and the $40 processing fee (per dog) is due, when the sample is returned to the AKC. AKC also offers a Prepaid Test Kit for only $35 (per dog). You can save $5 per dog by paying in advance.
DNA Test Kits may be ordered through the AKC Online Store: http://www.akc.org/store/products/index.cfm?category_cde=DNA&product_view=thumb
or by contacting the AKC at: AKC DNA Operations PO Box 900065 Raleigh, NC 27675-9065 Phone: 919-233-9767 E-mail: orderdesk@akc.org
2. Fill out the FSS litter registration form. The form is available on line at: http://www.akc.org/pdfs/AL9999.pdf
Online registration is not possible at this time. Remember that the stud dog owner or representative will need to sign this form. The FSS registration numbers will be needed on both dogs. Please print clearly.
3. Fill out individual dog registration for each of the puppies. The form is available online at: http://www.akc.org/pdfs/ADFSS1.pdf
This can be done by the new owner, when the puppy is picked up. The cost for registration, when sent in as a group with the litter registration, is $10 per puppy instead of $35 per individual dog if done later. Registering a litter as a whole by the breeder insures that the puppies do get registered, as many pet owners will not follow through.
4. Mail litter registration form and individual puppy registrations to Christine Weisse, FSS Services, PO Box 900059, Raleigh, NC 27675.
Both the individual FSS Registration and the FSS Litter Registration are on the Berger Picard Club of America Yahoo Group site under Files: http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/AmericanBergerPicards/files/
